Everyday care
Leather and suede are durable, but they react to water, heat and friction. Regular light care does more than occasional heavy cleaning. After wearing or carrying a piece, wipe it with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. For smooth leather, a slightly damp cloth removes light marks. Dry the surface with a second cloth and let the piece dry naturally. Wipe spills at once, dabbing rather than rubbing.
Smooth leather
Apply a leather conditioner in a thin layer every few months, after testing it on a hidden spot. On shoes, use a cream polish in a matching or neutral colour, then buff with a brush or a cloth. Polish is for smooth leather only. Patent and coated leathers just need wiping with a soft cloth.
Suede and nubuck
Keep suede dry. Brush it in one direction with a suede brush to lift the nap, and rub marks gently with a suede eraser. Never use polish or cream on suede, and avoid rubbing stains with water, which can leave rings. For a grease mark, sprinkle cornflour or talcum powder on it, leave it for several hours, then brush it off.
Protecting against water
A protective spray made for leather or suede reduces the effect of light rain and splashes. Test it on a hidden area first, apply it in a ventilated room in thin, even coats, and let it dry fully before wearing the piece. It does not make a piece waterproof. If a piece gets wet, let it dry at room temperature, away from radiators, direct sunlight and hairdryers. Direct heat makes leather stiff and can crack it.
Storing bags, shoes and jackets
Fill bags with tissue paper or a soft cloth so that they keep their shape, and store them upright in a cotton dust bag or a pillowcase. Avoid plastic, which traps humidity. Keep shoes with shoe trees or rolled paper. Hang jackets on a wide, shaped hanger, with enough space around them. Choose a cool, dry, ventilated place.
When to see a specialist
Ink, mould, deep stains, tears and lined jackets are better left to a leather or suede specialist. Avoid household cleaners, bleach and nail polish remover, which can strip the colour and dry out the surface.
